So a month ago or so I did an Interview with one of the host of the podcast Basement Fodder. Hope you like the interview and remember to check out his stuff :).
1: What got you into podcasting?
Todd: Hmm...well, i think it goes back to when i was a kid, i used to make these mix tapes and record myself between songs like a DJ or host. I've always had a interest in radio and performing. Back in 2005 or so i listened to my first podcasts and i thought it would be a lot of fun, but at the time i thought it wouldn't be something i could actually do. Flash forward to 2013, my best friend and I would often be told, you two should have a podcast when people would hear our interplay. Dave and i sat down and talked about it, and though i wanted to do it, my social anxiety and fears made it a difficult task to actually go forward with. After much coaxing and reassuring from Dave, i agreed to go forward.
2: How'd the Basement Fodder come about?
Todd: After we decided we wanted to do a show, we started talking about content and format. We knew we wanted to talk comics, gaming, movies and pop culture, but we weren't sure how to smoothly cover all those topics. We did a few test runs, which thankfully will never see the light of day, and then we recorded whats now known as the "zero" episode. If you check our archive, you can listen to the zero show, it also features our abandoned original name, Basement Jargon. We decided on the change afterward, it just didn't feel quite right. The name Basement Fodder comes from the fact that our hang out spot, or man cave, is my basement, which we've named the "Basement of Doom". We record the show from there and all of our various promos and videos.
3: What is your favorite thing about doing a podcast?
Todd: I'd have to say my favorite thing about doing the show is the people we get to interact with. Getting a chance to become a part of the independent comics community and setting up at conventions has been a dream come true. Being able to meet people at shows and hear that they actually listen to and look forward to the show is the best compliment we could ever get.
4: How long has Basement Fodder Been around?
Todd: Our first episode went online on 11/19/2013
5: Would you continue to do podcasting for the rest of your life?
Todd: I think i would keep podcasting as long as its fun and people listen. I love the job and i've found that i'm pretty good with the technical aspect of things. I've helped others start their own shows and i've guest hosted on several shows as well. My goal is to follow in Kevin Smith's Smodcast footsteps and have a stable of shows under the Basement Fodder imprint.
6: Do you have a favorite gust who's been on the show?
Todd: I think i'd have to say my favorite guest has been comic writer Dirk Manning. Not only is he an excellent guest, but he's done a lot for us in the way of promotion. He's introduced us to many other writers and artists and also even published the links to our show in one of his books. I started as a big fan and over time, i've come to consider him a great friend as well.
7: How many episodes of the podcast do you have up?
Todd: As of this writing, there are 83 published episodes and three Vodcasts.
8: What advice could you give to someone who wants to start their own podcast?
Todd: The best advice i can give anyone starting out is do your research. Find the best hosting site prices, look into public domain music, research the best recording software and equipment. Preparation will save you a million headaches. Also, don't restrict yourself. Heavy formatting leads to a very stiff and stilted sounding show.
9: What has been your best experience doing this podcast?
Todd: Getting asked to perform live shows at conventions and comic shop events. It's really been an amazing experience to get to see convention culture from the other side of the table.
10: Is their someone who you'd really want on Basement Fodder that you haven't had on yet?
Todd: My dream interview would have to be Kevin Smith. He's one of my idols and honestly, i'd just like to have a conversation with the man. To be able to pick the brain of a guy that has accomplished so many of the things i'd like to do would be invaluable to me.
11: Where can people find you on the internet?
Todd: We can be found at the following links: www.facebook.com/basementfodder @basementfodder on twitter, www.podcastgarden.com/podcast/basementfodder , https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/basement-fodder/id827265840 on itunes and our t-shirts are at basementfodder.spreadshirt.com
